After legalizing the uses of Indian cannabis… demands for openness to “recreational products”

At a time when the dynamism of the production of legal cannabis products continues in Morocco, voices are being raised calling for the necessity of diversifying these products and opening up to so-called “recreational products.”

Investors called for the need to diversify Indian hemp products within the framework of the current law and standards, and not to limit the products to cosmetics or health materials.

This appeal came on the sidelines of visits organized by the National Agency for the Legalization of Activities Related to Marijuana to agricultural lands in the Taounate Province, during the current week.

In this context, Chakib El Khayari, coordinator of the Moroccan Coalition for the Medical and Industrial Use of Cannabis, confirmed that “in Morocco it will be necessary to open a discussion; Because legalization for medical and industrial purposes will only contribute to reducing the number of farmers involved in the illicit drug trafficking ring. It will also not put an end to consumers of this plant and its derivatives, as there is a strong international trend that calls for the need to provide a space for legal recreational consumption to eliminate the negatives of dealing with the black market.”

The coordinator of the Moroccan coalition for the medical and industrial use of cannabis continued to say, in a statement to Hespress, that “on June 16, 2023, I, together with the security group of the people of the provinces that know the cultivation of cannabis, launched a call to open a public discussion regarding the recreational use of cannabis; This is in response to the recommendation of the report of the Development Model Committee, as well as the recommendation of the Economic, Social and Environmental Council included in their reports submitted to the King, in view of the health dimensions represented in reducing risks in addition to the economic benefits.

The same civil activist stated that “during this parliamentary session, parliamentary teams and parties will be contacted to open a discussion with them on the floor of the call in order to open a public discussion on the subject, especially by organizing study days and seminars on the subject.”

Al-Khayari continued: “Through the appeal, we worked to highlight the potential effects of legalizing the recreational use of cannabis based on solid scientific studies, especially with regard to the results that have been achieved to reduce demand on the black market according to comparative experiments, in addition to what was also confirmed by the lack of great certainty regarding “The positive and negative health impacts of regulating the recreational consumption of marijuana.”
