About 15 to 2 million people in Bangladesh are affected by epilepsy. The rate of long-term disability in this disease is increasing due to lack of proper treatment and regular medication.

Experts say that regular treatment can control seizures in 90 percent of cases. But it is not possible to get rid of the disease. In 10 percent of patients, the disease cannot be controlled. Because, in the country, the surgery system for this disease is limited.

Like other countries of the world, Bangladesh is also celebrating ‘World Epilepsy Day’ on Monday (February 12). This year’s theme of the day is ‘Walking with Epilepsy and My Achievements’. The day is observed every year on the second Monday of February to raise awareness about this disease.

On the occasion of the day, Professor Dr. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Department of Child Neurology. Gopen Kumar Kundu said, 70-80 percent of cases of epilepsy start in childhood. This disease is more common in low and middle income countries. Very few in developed countries.

He also said that epilepsy is mainly caused by various problems at birth. Among these, children who do not cry or cry late, lack of oxygen, brain injury, severe jaundice at birth or convulsions at birth, these children have epilepsy.
