World cycling is recovering from a major loss. Former competitor Alexej Tsatevič, who participated in many prestigious races during his career, died at the age of just thirty-four. The sad news was announced by the Russian Cycling Federation. However, there is an unexplained issue surrounding the death of Tsatevich.
The federation did not state the cause of death. No one from among the sports public knows how the Russian athlete actually died! So Tsatevich’s death remains a mystery. Condolences from fans immediately started pouring in on the Internet. “He was too young to die. My sincere condolences to the bereaved.” wrote one of the grieving users according to the British newspaper The Sun. “A tragic fate. Rest in peace, Alexey,” added another.
Despite the fact that Tsatevič’s professional career seemingly lasted only a few years, he lived a colorful life as a pro. In 2012, he started participating in races under the banner of the UCI World Tour organization, which covers, among others, the famous Tour de France. Specifically, he drove for the Katuša team. He recorded his greatest success in 2016, when he won a stage of the Round of Catalonia race. Specifically, a sprint in front of Primož Roglič.
Three years earlier he triumphed in the Belgian Le Samym race and later also won a stage at the Settimana Ciclistica Lombarda in Italy. During his career, he also met Russian dictator Vladimir Putin in person. In 2017, he transferred to the Gazprom – RusVelo team. He retired after the season. After giving up cycling, he became the captain of the Russian hockey team Meteor, which plays in an amateur competition. Tsatevich’s funeral took place on Wednesday, April 10, in the Russian city of Verkhnaya Pyshma.
