MANADO – There are a number volcano sApart from the Space Mountain that had just erupted. Since April 16 2024, Gunung Ruang activity has increased from alert level to alert according to BNPB.

Based on the BNPB Pusdalops report, Mount Ruang in Sitaro Islands Regency, North Sulawesi erupted on Tuesday (16/4) evening. The affected locations are Pumpente Village and Pathology Village in Tagulandang District.

The volcanic eruption affected 272 heads of families and displaced 828 people. Handling the eruption of Mount Ruang, the Regent of the Siau Islands, Tagulandang Biaro (Sitaro), declared an Emergency Response Status for 14 days starting from 16 – 29 April 2024.

Apart from the news of the eruption of Mount Ruang, North Sulawesi actually has a number of other volcanoes spread across various regions. Following is the list.

1. Mount Lokon

The first volcano in North Sulawesi is near Tomohon City. This mountain has a height of 1,580 m above sea level. As the name suggests, Mount Lokon means the oldest and largest.

Mount Lokon is still an active mountain. This mountain has a crater on its side and not at the top of the mountain. Giant footprints were also found around it.

2. Mount Soputan

Next there is Mount Soputan, which on December 5 2023 showed signs of increased volcanic activity. This mountain, which is about 50 kilometers southwest of the city of Manado, has a height of 1,784 m above sea level.

This mountain was formed during the Quaternary period on the southern edge of the Tondano caldera, and is one of the most active volcanoes in Sulawesi. Mount Soputan is a source of materials in the form of stone and sand, the area at the foot of Mount Soputan has good materials for building houses or buildings by the local community.

3. Ash Karangetang

This mountain, which is also known as Api Siau, is located in the northern part of North Sulawesi, Indonesia, precisely in the Tagulandang Biaro Siau Islands Regency.

This mountain, which has a height of 1,827 m, is also one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia, having erupted more than 40 times since 1675 as well as many smaller eruptions that are not documented in historical records.

4. Banua Wuhu

Banua Wuhu is an underwater volcano located to the west of Mahengetang Island, Sangihe Islands, North Sulawesi. This mountain has a height of 400 meters above the sea floor and its peak is at a depth of 5 meters below the water surface.

Historical records show that some islands temporarily formed and then disappeared. The 90 meter high island was formed in 1835, but became just a few rocks in 1848. An eruption in September 1889 formed a new island that reached a height of 50 meters in 1894.

These are the four volcanoes in North Sulawesi apart from Mount Ruang which have just shown activity. With so many volcanoes, people need to be alert and responsive, especially those who live around these mountains.
