25 dead after bus plunges into ditch in Peru At least 25 people were killed and several others injured when a bus plunged off a mountain road in northern Peru into a ravine, local authorities said Monday. This information was given in a report of AFP.

A local official told Olga Bobadilla RPP radio that the accident happened late Sunday night on a road in the Andean region of Cajamarca. The bus fell into a ditch about 200 meters (about 650 feet) from the road.

The death toll was initially reported to be 23. Later this number was confirmed as 25. Municipal official Jaime Herrera said the bus carrying more than 50 passengers fell into the ditch. Several passengers were washed away. The cause of the accident is being investigated.

Rescue workers and firemen reached the spot soon after the accident. The injured were rescued from the scene and admitted to the hospital. Relatives of the victims started gathering there and many broke down in tears. They become anxious to know the news of their loved ones.

Celendin municipality declared 48 hours of mourning after the accident. Accidents are common on Peruvian roads due to speeding, poor road conditions and lack of proper adherence to traffic laws. Last year, more than 3,000 deaths were recorded in road accidents in Peru.
