Sugar or glucose itself is the main source of energy for the body. Meanwhile, sugar deficiency can cause short-term complications, such as confusion and dizziness, as well as more serious problems, including seizures, coma, and, rarely, death.
To prevent low blood sugar and its potentially dangerous side effects, monitor your blood sugar levels and treat low blood sugar as soon as you notice it. Apart from that, also pay attention to identifiable symptoms of decreased blood sugar levels.
Signs of a Body Lack of Sugar
The following are signs that the body is lacking sugar as reported by Everyday Health, Wednesday (1/5/2024).
1. Hunger
If you suddenly feel like you are starving, your body is signaling a decrease in blood sugar. You can regulate blood sugar by calculating your carbohydrate intake and understanding the different types and sources of food.
The right amount of carbohydrates for each person depends on various factors. So, you should consult a dietitian or certified diabetes care and education specialist to determine what is right for you.
2. Feelings of Anxiety
When glucose levels drop too low, your body releases the hormones pinephrine (adrenaline) and cortisol, which signal the liver to release more sugar into the blood. It can cause anxiety and related symptoms, such as shaking, sweating, and heart palpitations.
3. Restless Night and Day
Nocturnal hypoglycemia, which causes about half of all episodes of low blood glucose, can cause a number of sleep disorders. Symptoms include night sweats, nightmares, waking up suddenly and crying, and feeling restless and confused when waking up.
