In the final phase of the World Cup in Hulst, Mathieu van der Poel spat at fans who booed him and, according to a witness, also threw urine and beer at them. Wout van Aert was fighting for fifth place at the time and therefore experienced nothing of the accident. He later defended Van der Poel.

“The people who come to shout boo, they better not come,” the Belgian said The newspaper. “I think it’s a shame, I can’t say anything else about it. Mathieu is someone who can usually control himself very well. So something must have happened.”

Van Aert himself had an unlucky day. He still finished in the top five, but after a long race to catch up. “The start didn’t go very well, so I had to quickly recover some positions,” he told the Jumbo-Visma website. “Unfortunately I fell in the battle for positions. Ultimately my chain turned out to be faulty. This wasted a lot of my time. When I was finally able to start the chase, I had a puncture and had to go half a lap with a flat tire. This meant that the fight for the podium was over.”
