A new study by scientists suggests that the bacteria that live on women’s skin may partially influence the amount of facial wrinkles.

Exposure to UV light is a proven risk factor for skin loss of elasticity, spots, wrinkles and other signs of aging. The authors of the new study found that bacteria may also play a role. They analyzed 13 studies on the condition of the skin of 650 women between the ages of 18 and 70. Participants with a more diverse microbiome (having many different types of bacteria) had finer wrinkles on their skin.
Having a diverse microbiome also has benefits, it says: Women are less likely to suffer from dehydrated skin, a risk factor for sagging skin.
Previous studies have shown that healthy young women have fewer types of bacteria on their faces than older women: Cutybacteria Acnes, which lives in the pores of young skin and feeds on sebum, predominates.
