Why not use »earpicks«? We load the ointment into the ear, says the expert

THEY HELP THE JAWS

“The ear canal rids itself of excess sebum with the help of jaw movements and it gradually moves out of the ear canal. It is a natural process of so-called self-cleansing,” explains MUDr. Jana Hanáková, doctor of the Pilsen ENT EUC Clinic.

WHY NOT USE COTTON STICKS?

By frequent cleaning, we deprive the skin of the ear canal of its natural protection, and it defends itself by increasing sebum production. “We also run the risk of carelessly injuring the skin of the ear and may develop a painful inflammation of the ear canal, or we may even injure the eardrum with subsequent hearing impairment. If we clean our ears with sticks, we “load” the wax as deep as into a cannon.

After some time, a sebaceous plug will form and a gradual or sudden loss of hearing will occur. It happens after bathing, when the accumulated sebum swells and blocks the ear canal. As regular care, it is enough to wipe the ear with the end of a towel after evening hygiene and visit an otorhinolaryngologist if the ear feels clogged.” advises MUDr. Hanakova.

Beware of loud noise

Any sound that we perceive as unpleasantly intense is considered noise. The dangerous limit is 85 decibels. “Excessive noise can damage the hair cells in the inner ear, and sometimes it ends up with damage and hearing loss. Noise also has a negative effect on the cardiovascular system and blood pressure, it also causes stress or increases the risk of injury,” warns PharmDr. Ivana Lánová.

MEASURES AGAINST NOISE

• Keep the TV, radio or headphones at a lower volume.

• Avoid noise smog by using earplugs, noise canceling headphones.

• Stay away from speakers at a concert.

• Let your hearing rest in silence for at least 12 hours.

• Include foods rich in magnesium in your diet (bananas, almonds, nuts, legumes).
