European Council President Charles Michel posted on his X microblog that he had a good discussion with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan regarding Armenia-EU relations and the Armenian-Azerbaijani process. When that meeting took place, in what format, where, Charles Michel did not elaborate. And that is interesting because the Armenian side, at least for now, does not seem to have reported any discussion between Nikol Pashinyan and Charles Michel.
Among the information about the meetings and contacts of the Prime Minister of Armenia during the Munich Security Conference, there was no report of any reprimand or contact with Charles Michel. After Munich and before the CE President’s note, the Armenian side did not give any message. It turns out that Charles Michel was ahead of Yerevan. And did Michel have a discussion with Ilham Aliyev, whom he congratulated on the extraordinary reproduction, the day after the voting in Azerbaijan, making a note again in this regard and stating that he welcomes Aliyev’s commitment to resuming the Brussels format negotiations?
However, there was no concrete announcement about the resumption. Moreover, after the meeting held in Munich with the mediation of German Chancellor Scholz, it was announced that the parties agreed to adhere to the Prague and Brussels agreements and continue working on the peace treaty. But, it’s largely a statement that says nothing or little that has been made over and over again. Meanwhile, it is not clear in what format they will continue the work on the contract. Because that work continued even after the cessation of meetings on the Brussels platform, with transfers between Yerevan and Baku.
At the same time, it should be noted that Charles Michel is a “lame duck”, that is, the outgoing president of the European Council. There are new European Parliament elections in June. Charles Michel will no longer run for the position of President of the European Council. It is possible that he currently has minimal problems in front of him, to at least have a so-called positive image at the end of his tenure, including in relation to the Brussels format he initiated, leaving the impression of its recovery.
