In its statement, the World Health Organization said that e-cigarettes are not effective in quitting tobacco, but instead create a different kind of addiction. In the statement, it was mentioned that e-cigarettes, especially offered to young people, are sold to children and young people through social media without any age restrictions.

Publika.az reports that the WHO authorities have called to take urgent measures:

“E-cigarettes were allowed to be on the open market and aggressively marketed to young people. “The sale of electronic cigarettes is prohibited in 34 countries, in 88 countries there is no minimum age limit for purchasing electronic cigarettes, and in 74 countries there are no regulations regarding these harmful products.”

Director General of WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said that children are trapped at an early age and start using e-cigarettes, calling on countries to take strict measures to prevent the purchase of cigarettes to protect their citizens.

WHO emphasized that electronic cigarettes cause heart and lung diseases:

“E-cigarettes with nicotine are highly addictive and harmful to health. Although their long-term health effects are not fully understood, some have been found to cause cancer and others to increase the risk of heart and lung disease.

In many countries, there is an alarming increase in e-cigarette use among children and young adults, in some cases exceeding adult use.”

The statement on children’s use of e-cigarettes by country includes the following statements:

“In all WHO regions, 13-15-year-old children use e-cigarettes at a higher rate than adults. Rates of e-cigarette use among 16- to 19-year-olds in Canada doubled between 2017 and 2022, while the number of young users in the UK tripled in the past three years. Research shows that young people who regularly use e-cigarettes are nearly three times more likely to smoke later in life. Taking into account the national conditions, there is a need for urgent measures to prevent the use of e-cigarettes and combat nicotine addiction, as well as a comprehensive approach to the fight against tobacco.”
