GAZA – Yahya Sinwar has just been appointed as the new leader of Hamas. He replaced the position of Ismail Haniyeh who was previously killed in Teheran, Iran.

Sinwar himself is not a new name in the Hamas elite. He has been widely known as an important figure in the group with a flashy track record.

Despite being newly appointed, Sinwar has faced a series of threats from Israel. Moreover, he is considered the figure responsible for the October 7 attacks.

So, what is the content of the threat that Israel has made to Yahya Sinwar? Here is the review.

Fill in the Israeli threat to Yahya Sinwar

Yahya Sinwar has become Hamas’ new political bureau chief, replacing Ismail Haniyeh. The Times of Israel reported that he was chosen by Hamas’ Shura Council, a consultative body made up of elected officials from the group’s four territories: Gaza, the West Bank, the diaspora and Israeli prison inmates.

Israel had previously suspected Sinwar of being the mastermind behind the October 7 incident. After the massacre, IDF spokesman Richard Hecht called him a “dead man walking.”

Despite his promotion to the new political bureau chief, Sinwar has long been a target for Israeli assassination, and the IDF said the change in status would not stop efforts to eliminate him.

“The hunt for Sinwar will not stop until we capture him, dead or alive,” the IDF spokesman said.

Echoing the IDF, Foreign Minister Israel Katz echoed the same sentiment, stating that Hamas’ decision to designate Sinwar was another compelling reason to eliminate him immediately.

Meanwhile in the United States, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Sinwar remains a key figure needed to sign off on talks for a possible ceasefire and hostage exchange in Gaza. Therefore, he hopes both sides can exercise restraint for the time being.

On the side of Hamas and its allies, the election of Yahya Sinwar as head of Hamas’ political bureau marks a strong message to Israel. It means that the fire of the Palestinian liberation struggle has not ended and will continue to change.
