Starting next July 7, Colombia will take a significant step towards preserving the environment by banning a series of single-use plastics.

This measure, contemplated in Law 2232, approved in 2022 by the Congress of the Republic, aims to progressively reduce the production and consumption of these highly polluting materials.

The implementation of this law has generated concern among some business owners, especially those who depend on the manufacture and sale of disposable plastics, such as straws and bags. However, for many, this is an opportunity to drive innovation and the adoption of more sustainable alternatives.

What plastics will be banned?

Starting July 7, Colombians will say goodbye to several single-use plastic products. These include:

  • Payment Point Bags: Used to pack, load or transport packages and merchandise, with the exception of those that are reusable or for industrial use.
  • Bags for Newspapers and Advertising: Used to package newspapers, magazines, advertising and invoices, as well as in laundries to package washed clothes.
  • Rolls of Empty Bags: Used in commercial surfaces to pack, load or transport packages and merchandise, or carry bulk food, except for raw animal products.
  • Mixers and Pitillos for Drinks.
  • Plastic Supports for Inflation Pumps.
  • Plastic Supports for Cotton Swabs or Flexible Swabs.

This ban seeks to discourage the indiscriminate use of plastics and promote more responsible and environmentally friendly practices.
