The tennis season has started again in Australia. All eyes are on Rafael Nadal. The 22-time Grand Slam winner begins his final season as a professional tennis player.

There was a doubles match scheduled for this morning in Brisbane. Nadal was on court with former professional Marc Lopez. In 2016 they won gold together at the Rio Olympics.

A new triumph was not possible. Nadal and Lopez lost twice 6-4 against the Australian duo Purcell-Thompson.

With crossed backhand

A packed Pat Rafter Arena saw Rafael Nadal ready for his latest trick. The 37-year-old Spaniard no longer appeared to be bothering his hip, which kept him off the pitch for almost a year.

At times, tennis fans have seen Nadal show off one of his specialties: the powerful, cross-court backhand.

He will be able to do it again on Tuesday. Nadal will then play in the singles tournament against Dominic Thiem, the Austrian who he beat twice in the Roland Garros final (in 2018 and 2019).
