Warning from WHO: “It should be banned in schools!” – 2024-03-01 03:26:30

In a written statement issued by the WHO, it was mentioned that the new academic year has started in many countries and it was announced that 2 new editions of the “guide for creating nicotine-free and tobacco-free campuses” have been prepared.

Publika.az referring to the foreign press, it is reported that the said publications contain information on how to support students to quit smoking, educational campaigns and their implementation. In the statement, 4 recommendations were given for creating a nicotine-free and tobacco-free school environment for young people. This includes banning the possession and sale of nicotine and tobacco products on school campuses, banning direct and indirect advertising and promotion of these products, and not establishing sponsorship relationships with the tobacco and nicotine industry.

It was also noted that the tobacco industry’s “relentless” targeting of young people has led to an increase in the use of e-cigarettes, and 9 out of 10 cigarette users started smoking before the age of 18.

In a statement, Ruediger Krech, director of the WHO Department of Health Promotion, emphasized that we must protect young people from the toxic smoke of second-hand smoke, as well as from advertisements promoting these products, when they are sitting in the classroom, playing outside or waiting at the school bus stop.

India, Indonesia, Ireland, Kyrgyzstan, Morocco, Qatar, Syria, Saudi Arabia and Ukraine are among the countries that have successfully implemented policies supporting tobacco- and nicotine-free campuses, WHO said.
