Ursula von der Leyen will run for a second term as President of the European Commission. The German announced this at a meeting of her party CDU, reports The Guardian, and could possibly be officially announced later today.

The 65-year-old von der Leyen kept secret for a long time whether she would run for a new term and avoided all questions on the subject. But she would now have made her decision known to her fellow party members, it sounds. She therefore wants to run for office again as head of the most powerful European institution in Brussels.

There is a good chance that von der Leyen will not be the only candidate. According to Estonian media, Finnish Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, among others, would like to win the post and become committee chairman.

If the CDU agrees with von der Leyen’s decision and officially nominates her as a candidate, the German must receive support from two other parties within the European People’s Party (EPP). A vote on this will take place in March at the EPP congress. The European elections will follow from June 6 to 9, where everything will be finalized.
