In conjunction with the celebration of International Volunteer Day, AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023 volunteers are preparing for the launch of the 18th edition of the most important tournament on the continent, attracting approximately 6,000 volunteers to provide support for a wide range of tasks covering 20 areas in the tournament’s operational operations.
The Qatar 2023 Asian Cup volunteer team is distinguished by its diversity and inclusion, as the volunteers represent 107 nationalities, and their ages range from 18 to 72 years. A large number of team members have extensive experience gained through their participation in major sporting events and tournaments previously hosted by Qatar, while 5% of them are having their first experience in volunteer work in the upcoming sporting event.
Rasha Al-Qarni, Executive Director of Administrative Affairs and Workforce at the Local Organizing Committee for the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023, stressed the vital role of volunteers in supporting the operational operations of the Asian Championship hosted by Qatar next January. She also noted the keenness of the Local Organizing Committee to celebrate the humanitarian aspects of the work teams. And the importance of supporting volunteers and staff, who are responsible for making a difference and providing great experiences for fans and players alike.
In this context, Al-Qarni said: “Volunteers form the beating heart that supports the tournament’s operations, and we are proud of the growing volunteer culture in Qatar, which is witnessing an increasing demand from all segments of society, and which represents an important aspect of the legacy that was formed through hosting major sports tournaments over the past years.” “.
For his part, Qatari volunteer Abdul Mohsen Al-Yafei expressed his pride in returning again to volunteer in the Asian Cup, as he had previously volunteered in the 2011 edition of the tournament, which was also launched in Qatar.
Al-Yafei, who has become a well-known face in the volunteer work scene in Qatar since 2000, said: “Since my childhood, I have become accustomed to joining volunteer work programs and initiatives, which hold a special place for me, because volunteering represents for me an opportunity to give back to my country. Regardless of the nature of the tasks we will perform in the upcoming tournament, we all strive to actively participate and be part of the success of major events and tournaments, and we are proud to provide support to our country in hosting this prestigious sporting event.”
The volunteer program for the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023 has received nearly 50,000 applications since registration for the program opened on October 5, while former volunteers, including the British “Olu Famuyiwa,” contributed to conducting more than 850 interviews at the volunteer center located in Lusail Stadium.
Famuyiwa, who has lived in Qatar for 15 years and previously joined the Qatar 2022 World Cup volunteer team, said: “I see volunteering as synonymous with a great sense of belonging, as we saw at the Qatar 2022 World Cup, where the volunteer team included people from diverse cultural backgrounds, but we were able to… Accomplishing our tasks and providing the required support in the spirit of one family. “The memories of the Qatar 2022 World Cup are still fresh in our minds, and we are pleased to prove to the world once again that Qatar is ready to host another amazing Asian Cup.”
As for Samah Abu Sneina, an active volunteer since 2018, she indicated that volunteer work provided her and other women with an irreplaceable opportunity to participate in international tournaments.
Abu Sneina, a fan of the Jordanian Nashama team, added: “I began my journey in the field of volunteering years ago, which gave me and many women the opportunity to demonstrate our skills and prove our worth and ability to make a difference in the world of sports.”
It is noteworthy that the widespread participation of more than 35,000 volunteers in major sporting events and tournaments hosted by Qatar over the past years provides a clear picture of the growth of the culture of volunteer work in Qatar, which is witnessing an increasing spread and attracts participants from various segments of society.
