A 40-year-old man was sentenced to 12 months in prison by the Three-member Criminal Court of Volos, accused of violence against a police officer with a screwdriver, threat and resistance during his arrest.

The defendant, who currently lives and works in Germany, appeared in court and denied the charges, claiming that he was taking his child to school the day after Epiphany.

As reported by thenewspaper.gr, the man challenged the police officer by brandishing a screwdriver and shouting “I’ll nail you, I’ll screw you”, aiming at the face and chest.

The 40-year-old was eventually acquitted of attempted grievous bodily harm with intent and given a suspended one-year prison sentence for assaulting an officer and threatening.

It all happened in January 2021 in Volos, when the defendant caused terror and concern by threatening a man in the street by pointing a screwdriver he was holding.

At the same time, at the junction of Irene Avenue and Averof Street, he tried to attack a 44-year-old police officer with a screwdriver with the intention of injuring him in the face and chest, however he avoided him and escaped injury.

In the afternoon of the same day, the 40-year-old was spotted by police officers in S. Ionia, and to avoid arrest he pushed two security officers away, threatening and cursing them.

The police arrested him in the context of the autoforos following a criminal charge that had been filed against him for attempted bodily harm.

Immediately after the incident, the 40-year-old immigrated to Germany.
