[현대건강신문=여혜숙 기자] One study showed that vitamin D, known for preventing osteoporosis and depression, also prevents senile fatty liver disease.

The National Institute of Health of the Korea Agency for Disease Control and Prevention announced that it was the first to determine that vitamin D can directly suppress the formation of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which occurs due of natural aging.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease refers to a case in which more than 5% of fat is deposited in the liver. In particular, in Korea 40.4% of people over the age of 65 suffer from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

In particular, fatty liver disease can cause liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, and liver cancer, as well as chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and dementia. It is known that in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes increases by 2.2 times, cardiovascular diseases increase by 1.6 times, and dementia increases by 8%.

The National Institute of Health said: “Compared to Westerners, the number of patients with vitamin D deficiency is increasing among Koreans, and vitamin D deficiency is known to increase significantly in the aging elderly population,” adding : “Vitamin D is associated with the development of diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: “There is research showing that there is a correlation, but the effect and mechanism of action are not exactly known,” he explained.

According to data from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service, the number of patients with vitamin D deficiency in Korea amounts to 73.7% of all patients with nutrient deficiency and has more than tripled in four years, from 86,285 in 2017 to 247,077 in 2021.

Through experiments on elderly mice, the research group from the Department of Research on Endocrine and Kidney Diseases of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità has demonstrated for the first time in the world that vitamin D deficiency caused by natural aging drastically reduces the amount of Micos 60, a protein that regulates the metabolic structure of the mitochondrial inner membrane, thereby significantly increasing fat accumulation in the liver.

Additionally, supplementing sufficient amounts of vitamin D in aged mice has been shown to directly increase Mycos 60 protein and inhibit fatty liver formation.

The results of this study were published in the January online edition of “Experimental Molecular Medicine”, a world-renowned academic journal in the field of medical science.

Park Hyun-young, director of the National Institute of Health, said: “The results of this study are significant studies that directly reveal the preventive effect of vitamin D and its regulatory mechanism in a situation where evidence on the effect is lacking. of vitamin D in the prevention of fatty liver disease,” adding: “A suitable vitamin for the elderly.” “It is expected that intake of D may reduce the onset of fatty liver disease due to aging.”

Eggs, an essential part of our diet, are the best food to provide vitamin D. This is because one large egg provides 10% of the daily requirement of vitamin D. Additionally, blueback fish such as sardines, tuna, salmon and shiitake mushrooms are known to be rich in vitamin D.

Meanwhile, sunlight is the best source of vitamin D, but it is almost impossible for older people who have limited mobility or who have to stay indoors for health reasons to get enough vitamin D from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. In this case it is a good idea to get vitamin D through food.

Most foods contain small amounts of vitamin D. In particular, eggs, which represent a staple in our diet, are the best food for vitamin D intake. This is because one large egg provides 10% of the daily requirement of vitamin D. Additionally, blueback fish such as sardines, tuna, salmon, and shiitake mushrooms are known to be rich in vitamin D.

Sardines, a type of blue-backed fish, are also a food rich in vitamin D. Two sardines can provide 12% of your daily vitamin D requirement. Another benefit of sardines is that they contain more omega-3 fats than salmon or tuna.

Canned tuna is also rich in vitamin D. Consuming about 85 g of canned tuna provides almost 40% of your daily requirement of vitamin D. Canned tuna is also an excellent source of protein and selenium.

Salmon is also a fish rich in vitamin D. There is also a variety of salmon that provides 112% of the recommended daily intake of vitamin D in just 85 grams. Salmon is also an excellent source of omega-3 fats, which are beneficial for brain, heart and skin health.

Sun-dried shiitake mushrooms are also known to be a food rich in vitamin D. Just as humans produce vitamin D in the body when exposed to sunlight, the vitamin D content of mushrooms also increases when exposed to ultraviolet rays. In particular, shiitake mushrooms are rich in ergosterol, the precursor of vitamin D, and 100 g of sun-dried shiitake mushrooms contain up to 40㎍ of vitamin D.
