Vienna (OTS) The Vienna professional rescue service is sending a strong signal for a climate-neutral city. On Thursday, City Councilor for Health Peter Hacker and the head of professional rescue, Rainer Gottwald, presented the first electric emergency doctor vehicle (NEF). This means that a long evaluation phase moves into the practical phase in order to show how e-mobility works in operational use. The Mercedes-Benz eVito can now be seen on the streets of Vienna as the first fully electric emergency medical vehicle (NEF) – it is the first E-NEF in Austria. From the Favoriten rescue station, the electric car is alerted to higher-priority operations, such as heart attacks, serious accidents or cardiac arrests. The small van is equipped like all emergency medical vehicles and offers the emergency team even better comfort – and without emissions. The change will save more than 8 tons of CO2 per year. The vehicle is charged via the station’s own e-charging station; most of the electricity is generated by the in-house photovoltaic system on the roof of the rescue station.

“Future topics such as nationwide e-mobility require innovative thinking. The professional rescue shows that sustainable economics also has a place in a well-functioning health system. With Austria’s first fully electric emergency medical vehicle, Vienna is making progress and making another important contribution to a climate-neutral city,” says City Councilor for Health Peter Hacker, pleased about the new vehicles.

“As the only professional rescue service, we also live up to our role model role when it comes to e-mobility and are moving towards a more sustainable future. It’s not just about the best health of patients, but also that of our environment. Thanks to the conscientious work of the employees, what was once a future topic was made practical and shows that e-mobility and the best preclinical care do not have to be a contradiction,” says Dr. Rainer Gottwald, head of the professional rescue service in Vienna.

Recently there has also been an ID. Buzz the professional rescue fleet. He is available to the operations management of the special operations group. In operations with particular challenges or a large number of injured people, the SEG is responsible for the organizational management of operations and coordinates events on site. With the two prototypes, the professional rescue service is starting a further evaluation phase to see whether e-mobility can also be expanded to other areas of the rescue service.

Own workshop big plus

The professional rescue service has its own workshop where the more than 125 vehicles in the fleet are serviced and repaired. Thanks to the highly qualified employees, the new electric cars can also be repaired in the workshop. Working on motor vehicles under high voltage requires specific legally defined training. The emergency vehicles of the Vienna professional rescue service cover more than 3.1 million kilometers every year.

Sustainability is a big issue

The sustainable issue of renewable energies has played a key role in professional rescue in Vienna for many years. Five rescue stations are already equipped with photovoltaic systems. The panels supply the stations with specially produced electricity and cover up to a third of the energy requirements of the respective station. The PV systems save up to 40 tons of CO2 every year.
