The new Tesla Cybertruck has been on the market for about a month, and the first deliveries have already begun, but for now there are still very few examples in the hands of owners, so there is still a lot of information missing on the experiences of owners with this new model and revolutionary in its engineering. A Tesla Cybertruck owner, however, recently filmed his charging experience at a Supercharger station, but his experience still requires some clarification.

The experience is even more interesting, as the Cybertruck is the first model to take full advantage of the new Tesla 4680 batteries, which have much larger cell dimensions, so that fewer are needed per car, and at the same time offer enormous advantages in terms of production cost, energy density and charging and discharging power.

The owner of the Cybertruck went to a v3 Tesla Supercharger charging station in Mesa, Arizona. The generation specification is important, as it also determines the maximum charging power offered by that station. At v3, the maximum power is 250 kW, while the latest compressors, v4, can already offer 350 kW of power.

The Tesla owner filmed the entire charging experience, with the numbers indicated by the car, posted in the fast-forward video below. It arrived at the outlet with the battery at 14%, and it did not charge up to 80%, as would be more appropriate to obtain a high speed, but up to 90%. Before reaching the outlet, the car preconditioned the battery for about 20 minutes, bringing it to the ideal temperature for charging.

The charging session started with 255 kW of power, therefore practically beyond the maximum limits of the socket, but it started to drop quickly, already from 20% upwards. At 40% of the battery the charging power was already 150 kW, at 60% 100 kW and above 65% the power was only 75-80 kW.

In total, charging from 14% to 90% took 50 minutes, with 94 kWh of energy fed into the battery, which means an average power output of around 113 kW. If we only consider the time from 14 to 80%, then it is 40 minutes.

The conclusion would be that this power curve decreased quite rapidly during the evolution of the charges and kept pace with a relatively low power compared to the expectations of this new Tesla model with a 123 kWh battery and new technology inside it. But this is precisely where the absolutely necessary clarifications come into play.

First of all, it is a very crowded station, which is visible from the notifications on the screen, and this means that each charging point can receive less energy, and therefore the car charges a little more slowly, not because of the car, but because of the sockets. . Second – and more important, in fact – is the clarification that the Tesla Cybetruck has 800 volt architecture, and the Supercharger V3 outlets have 400 volts, and only the Supercharger V4 has 800 volts, and the kW output is the product of the voltage in volts and the intensity of the current in amperes. And if the voltage at this outlet cannot exceed 400 volts, this Cybetruck has no way of charging to the full power it is capable of from a weaker outlet. So, much more relevant to the curve and maximum power would be a load with an 800 volt outlet. But it’s also true that for now Tesla has many more 400 volt outlets in its network, given that the Cybetruck and Semi are the first models to switch to 800 volts, and this still makes the experience relevant and useful.
