On Sunday, February 18, the Municipality of Antigua Guatemala carried out a towing operation of vehicles parked on public roads, a measure that went viral after a video of the procedure was released. Two cars were removed with a tow truck for violating the prohibition on parking on public and pedestrian streets, especially during the Easter and Lent seasons.
The Antigua Guatemala City Council had previously announced that Holy Week and other important dates within the framework of Lent celebrations would be lived with a complete pedestrian experience in the urban area. This included the Sundays of Lent, the Fifth Saturday of Lent and from Sorrowful Friday to Easter Sunday.
“This year, the aforementioned days will be lived in a completely pedestrian experience, with the urban area free of vehicles, thus honoring this time of reflection and solemnity of the Processional Processions that travel through the streets,” explained the commune through its social networks. .

Parking spaces in Antigua Guatemala
The measure not only seeks to preserve the special atmosphere of Holy Week in Antigua Guatemala, declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, but also to guarantee the safety of visitors, tourists and parishioners during the celebration. Parking spaces will be offered in municipal and private parking lots for those visiting the city during this period.
The municipality has established a municipal and private parking system with more than 5,000 spaces available in municipal parking lots and more than 3,800 in private ones. Visitors with reservations at hotels, restaurants and Airbnb will be able to access without restriction, as long as they do not park on public roads.
Urban and extra-urban buses will be able to enter the circulation periphery established in the town, but they are urged to respect parking and mobility regulations during this special period in Antigua Guatemala.
