Mathieu van der Poel still thinks Wout van Aert is one of the best and most versatile cyclists in the world!
2023 was Mathieu van der Poel’s best year of his career. He was crowned world champion both on the field and on the road. In the spring he ticked two monuments (Milan-San Remo and Paris-Roubaix) from his wish list.
His great rival Wout van Aert has had a less good season. At big events he always missed the big fish. He once again won silver at the World Championships and the European Championships. In Paris-Roubaix he was allowed to get on the podium, but he had to let van der Poel and Philipsen go first.
Yet Van Aert can still count himself among the best riders in the world, because in big events he has always been very close. In the E3 Saxo Classic he even beat Van der Poel and Pogacar in a titanic sprint. His great rival Mathieu van der Poel also thinks so.
Ventoux
“Wout van Aert is the most versatile rider in the world,” says the world champion in an interview with A.D. “When you see what he did in the 2021 Tour by winning the Mont Ventoux stage… There is no one today who can win, like him, a sprint, a time trial and that Ventoux stage. But the best rider is definitely Pogacar. “
