The Private Technical University of Loja (UTPL), through the Communication, Education and Technology Research Group, presented the Media and Information Literacy project on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, which was worked together with UNESCO, the Ministries of Education (Mineduc) and Telecommunications (Mintel) and Fundamedios. The event took place at the UTPL Support Center, located in Quito.

Diana Rivera Rogel, dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Education and Humanities at UTPL, comments that has worked for 15 years in media and information skills and as a result of the pandemic it was necessary to promote this issue to implement criteria among citizens and for them to have a deep analysis of the information they receive and consume from different media, both traditional and digital, to avoid misinformation.

“We received an invitation from UNESCO to work together on a Media and Information Literacy project at the educational context level. From there, we worked with Mintel, which was already preparing a Digital Transformation document and we included and adapted it to literacy,” he says.

For its part, with the Mineduc, an analysis and cross-relation of competency variables was carried out to verify that what was proposed in the Unesco curriculum on Media and Information Literacy is applicable to the Ecuadorian educational context. It was concluded that it is viable and pertinent to do so, adds Rivera.

For this reason, a 7-week course is being carried out where 1,000 teachers have signed up and will have at hand all the necessary tools and knowledge on this topic. Previously, a pilot course was carried out that obtained excellent results, which motivated the execution of this second workshop. (YO)
