The health minister said in a statement regarding the death at LabAid Hospital that the investigation report will come on Thursday regarding the death of a person while undergoing endoscopy at LabAid Hospital. Earlier on Tuesday, an inspection was done by the Health Department.

Director of Health Department (Hospitals and Clinics) Dr. Abu Hossain Md. Moinul Ahsan said, not only a small hospital, LabAid or United Hospital will not be exempted if such allegations are found. We are aware of the death of a patient undergoing endoscopy last Monday night at LabAid Hospital. A high-level team headed by the Deputy Director of the Health Department visited there. The Ministry of Health and the Department of Health have taken the LabAid incident seriously. We have collected all the data. At the same time, I have asked them for more information.

He said, in view of the incident that happened in the United Hospital earlier, we have closed the United Medical College Hospital. The case is ongoing. If a patient dies while receiving treatment and there is any negligence on the part of the hospital authorities and doctors, it will be prosecuted through the ongoing legal case.

Convenor of National Health Rights Movement and former president of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) Professor Dr. Rashid-e Mahbub told Jago News that no doctor wants a patient to die. This happens in different countries. However, hospitals need regular monitoring. There needs to be an investigation.

He said wrong messages are being sent to the society about doctors in unexpected deaths. For this, the concerned doctors, state and regulatory bodies cannot avoid responsibility. Why these are happening, whether the doctor was wrong and negligent or not, what is their experience and skill, they need to be seen.

Not only small hospitals, LabAid or United Hospital will not be exempted if the complaint is proved. Current events are taken seriously. Collected data. Information has been sought from the hospitals.’— Director of Health Department

The Trustee of Planetary Health Academy, an organization of Bangladeshi doctors working in the UK and receiving medical services abroad, asked to know how the country’s health system is lacking with foreign countries. Md. Zaker Ullah said that common people are suffering from lack of trust in the country’s treatment and doctors. It is seen that a patient does not trust a doctor’s advice. Then another person is shown. Many go abroad without getting confidence even after showing it a second time. There are many good doctors in the country. But there are also many problems.

Mentioning the problem behind patients’ loss of trust, he said, “One big issue is time.” When doctors talk to patients in different countries, the patient is half cured after listening to them. But our doctors are not getting time in many cases. Many people think how can I give time to many patients.

Another big problem is that many people get money from pathologists, take money for tests (patients think that we are giving various tests unnecessarily). Again, it is seen that people from pharmaceutical companies are standing outside the hospital, taking pictures. Checking whether the doctor is prescribing the prescribed medicine or not. These are the erosion of principles.

Referring to the need for accountability to solve these problems, he said, there is no accountability among us. This is a big problem. It may not be possible to solve all the issues at the same time, but steps should be taken to solve these problems gradually. For this, all the organizations have to work together. And government initiative is most needed.
