AREQUIPA, Peru – A cruise ship from the American company Carnival rescued a group of 20 Cuban rafters who were sailing near the coast of Miami this Saturday.
In videos published on social networks you can see the Cubans approaching the cruise ship in a rustic boat. A couple of them were taking water from the boat with buckets, indicative of a probable sinking if the rescue had not occurred.
Likewise, the images filmed by Carnival crew members show how A Coast Guard speedboat pulls away from the ship once the Cubans have been saved.
To date, the whereabouts of the Cuban rafters is unknown, but the protocol of the United States authorities, established by law, calls for detaining potential migrants and deporting them to the island in the coming weeks.
In the midst of the migration crisis that Cuba is experiencing, thousands of citizens have chosen the sea route as an irregular route to reach US soil, even with the high risk that this implies.
The Jamaican authorities returned to Cuba this Sunday, February 26, by air, 10 migrants (all from Granma) who had left the country illegally across the sea with the intention of reaching the Cayman Islands, but bad weather took them to Jamaica , where they were intercepted.
The return operation was carried out through the Antonio Maceo airport in the eastern province of Santiago de Cuba, as reported by the Ministry of the Interior (MININT) on its account on the social network X (formerly Twitter).
On February 22, four other Cubans were deported from the Cayman Islands.
On that same date, a flight arrived in Havana with 51 irregular Cuban migrants (46 men and five women) deported from the United States. This was the second deportation flight of Cuban migrants in 2024 from the northern country, after 37 nationals were returned on January 25. The previous flight dated December 29, 2023, when 31 citizens of the Island who entered the United States illegally were repatriated.
