Gigantic waves hit the California coast for the third consecutive day, causing destruction, flooding streets and buildings. Video from the city of Ventura shows the moment the wave sweeps away people and a parked car.
The storm has been raging off the coast of California since Thursday. Powerful waves, reaching 12 meters, crash onto the land at great speed. Water floods the streets and some buildings are damaged. Evacuation orders have been issued in some cities. The services have urged caution when traveling and to avoid flooded places.
Some beaches have been closed. Rough sea warnings were issued for areas from the Mexican border to San Francisco.
“This wave came from nowhere”
In Ventura on Friday, a huge wave broke through the breakwaters and hit the waterfront as about 20 people admired the raging storm. Witness recording shows people start to run away in panic, but the wave carries some of them away, as well as a parked car. Some people were pushed up to 50 meters inland and at least eight of them were taken to hospital.
– This wave came out of nowhere. We saw it, several meters tall. I’m still trying to get over it, said John Frizzel, who has experienced the element’s strength firsthand.
As Stephanie Massan, who was running from the huge wave with others, said, “It’s crazy.” – When I was on the dock, I felt him shaking. It seems unreal, she added.
