The ship True Confidence, which sails under the flag of Barbados but is said to be in American hands according to the Houthi rebels, suffered heavy damage. U.S. officials say the crew abandoned ship. At the time of the attack, the ship was 57 nautical miles (105 kilometers) southwest of the Yemeni city of Aden.

The Houthi rebels have now claimed responsibility for the attack. Military spokesman Yehya Saree said the militias attacked the ship True Confidence with missiles in the Gulf of Aden, resulting in a fire. He added that the attack came about because the ship’s crew ignored warning messages from the armed forces.

Since November, the rebels, close to Iran, have targeted ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden that they say are linked to Israel, claiming solidarity with the Palestinians in light of the war in the Gaza Strip.

Since the United States established a coalition to protect commercial ships from attacks by Yemen’s Houthi rebels, the Houthis have also targeted American and British ships.
