Two Asteroids Will Pass Near Earth Today

According to NASA’s asteroid tracker, asteroid 2024 EK3, which is predicted to have a diameter of 11 meters, will pass closer to Earth than most other asteroids. This asteroid will be one of the closest to Earth in recent years.

Meanwhile, asteroid 2020 FU, named after professional wrestler John Cena’s ultimate move, is predicted to be around 31 meters wide.

However, there is no need to worry. Reporting from JPost, NASA estimates that the asteroid 2024 EK3 will pass at a distance of more than 600,000 kilometers from Earth, farther than the James Webb Space Telescope.

Even if asteroid 2024 EK3 were to hit Earth, its small size would likely cause it to burn up in the atmosphere, and the remaining material would likely be very small and harmless.

However, it should be noted, today’s events are a reminder of the importance of planetary defense. Various scientific efforts have been made to monitor outer space and launch spacecraft to prevent large asteroid impacts through the Asteroid Impact Deflection Assessment program.

Mission Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) NASA’s success in changing the orbit of the Dimorphous asteroid is clear proof of the capabilities of this technology. With adequate early warning, scientists can take precautions against dangerous asteroids in the future.

Even though it does not pose an immediate danger, the passage of this asteroid can have economic and social impacts. Flights in certain areas may be disrupted and public fear of potential collisions may increase.
