The Tunisian authorities announced the completion of administrative and logistical arrangements to launch a new commercial maritime line linking Tunisia to Libya, Morocco and Spain, starting from the commercial port of Sfax, with an average of two flights per month.

Al-Sharq Al-Awsat newspaper quoted Malik Al-Alawi, the authorized maritime agent for the new commercial line, as saying in a media statement that the official opening of this line will be the beginning of next March, and will enable the journey to Morocco to be completed in only four days, while the journeys to Spain will take six. Only days.

According to Al-Alawi, sea shipping between Morocco, Libya, Tunisia, and Spain will witness an important development, and this sea line will make container transportation more flexible and improve trade exchanges between the four countries.

The line avoids passing through Algeria, despite its presence on the same sea route leading to Morocco and Spain, which represents an indication of the limited commercial connection between Tunisia and Libya on the one hand, and between Algeria on the other hand.

According to what was announced by the Tunisian Ministry of Transport, this trade line falls within the framework of a strategy aimed at strengthening Tunisia’s position as a center for maritime trade in the Mediterranean, and it will also strengthen Tunisia’s commercial relations with its main partners in the region.

In the middle of this month, Tunisia held a meeting with the Ports and Maritime Transport Authority in Libya, with the aim of resolving all problems and discussing mechanisms for activating sea lines between Sfax and a number of Libyan cities, including Tripoli, Misrata and Benghazi. The two parties agreed to form a joint company between the Tunisian Shipping Company and the General National Maritime Transport Company, with the aim of working in the field of maritime transport and acquiring a share in the transport of passengers and goods in the western basin of the Mediterranean Sea.

Trade exchanges between Tunisia and Libya recorded $970 million in 2022, while the volume of exchanges between Morocco and Tunisia in 2021 amounted to $215.7 million in exports, compared to imports estimated at about $123 million. Dates are one of Morocco’s most prominent imports from Tunisia.

During the year 2022, the volume of trade exchange between Tunisia and Spain reached 1.9 billion euros, recording an improvement of 27 percent at the level of imports and 36 percent at the level of exports, and Tunisia hopes to increase its exports to these three markets.
