Trump profiles “anti-Mexican” Greg Abbott as vice president

The former president of the United States, Donald Trump, expressed that the governor of Texas, Greg Abbottknown for promoting harsh anti-immigrant policies, is “absolutely” on his short list of potential vice presidential candidates for his 2024 bid.

During a joint interview with Abbott on Fox News during his visit to the border with Mexico, Trump praised the governor as “a spectacular man” and said he would seriously consider him.

Sean Hannity, one of the conservative news network’s star hosts, asked Trump directly if Abbott was being considered for the vice presidential job.

Trump responded affirmatively, recalling Abbott’s endorsement during his presidential campaign last year.

“Yes, he would certainly be someone I would consider highly,” said the former US president.

The governor of Texas would be Trump’s vice president

In 2021, the governor of Texas declared the border a “disaster” area due to the increased flow of people crossing illegally.

In July of last year, Greg Abbott’s government, through the Texas Department of Public Safety, acquired software capable of locating and tracking migrants using their cell phones, as part of the border security Operation Lone Star efforts.

That same month, he ordered the installation of a wall of buoys on the border of the city of Eagle Pass, a city that borders Piedras Negras, Coahuila.

In October, the Republican ordered the closure of borders with Mexico and imposed rigorous inspections on Mexican trucks crossing the border, a measure that lasted three months.

In December 2023, the Republican signed into law SB4, considered one of the strictest in American history and which gives police the power to detain and deport migrants without due process.

Last Sunday he reported that the Texas National Guard is carrying out operations on the border with Mexico.
