The Medico-Legal Institute (IML) of Teófilo Otoni, in the Vale do Mucuri, confirmed this Saturday (13/1) the identity of the eight killed in an accident at KM 344 of the BR-116, in the rural area of the municipality of Campanário, in the Rio Doce valley. Among them are Pedro Davi Menezes Rolón, whose age has not been confirmed, and his 5-year-old son, Kadu Emmanuel de Oliveira Menezes. Among the victims was also a five-month-old baby.
The collision between a tour bus and a Chevrolet Veraneio pickup truck resulted in the deaths of four occupants of the car and four others traveling on public passenger transport late Friday afternoon (1/12). There are still 43 people injured, many of them in serious condition, with loss of limbs and injuries that could be disabling, according to rescuers.
In the car, in addition to Pedro and his son, there were the artisan Tauana Baroni and Raquel de Barros de Jesus. Already on the bus, the teacher Ueryanne Ketley Pereira de Jesus, 25, died; her grandmother, Maria Ferreira de Jesus, 79; Luna Batista de Jesus, 5 months; and Júlio César, the reserve driver.

On social media, the school where the teacher taught, in Sumaré (SP), mourned her death. “The management of EE Leonilda Rossi Barriquelo bids farewell to Professor Ueryanne, who has left us. We regret your early departure. Follow God,” she wrote. According to the institution, she is under surveillance in her hometown, in the municipality of Ladainha, in the Vale do Mucuri. Her grandmother’s funeral and wake will take place this Sunday (11/14).
The accident
The passenger transport vehicle had already traveled 180 kilometers and was heading from Novo Cruzeiro to Piracicaba (SP). Veraneio’s trajectory is still unknown.
The Veraneio was heading towards Bahia, uphill, while the tourist bus arrived at the bridge over the Itambacuri river after a long curved stretch of descent. The head-on collision launched the two vehicles from the small bridge, 47 meters long and 10 meters high, during the spring.
In total, eight SAMU ambulances – three from Governador Valadares, one from Frei Inocêncio and four from Teófilo Otoni – were involved in the rescue. The firefighters and ambulances from the municipalities near the accident site also intervened to help the victims.
