A traditional village Bengal cock fight was held on the fourth day of the seven-day Baisakhi fair in Bogra.
On Wednesday (April 17) afternoon, hundreds of visitors enjoyed the play at the municipal park square of the city under the initiative of Bogra Theatre. Many people have expressed surprise to see this cultural organization that is about to disappear.
Stick games, cockfights, leaf fetching, snake-beji games, ha-doo-doo are organized to introduce rural sports to the new generation. Attempts are being made to sustain these traditional sports in this fair organized by Bogra Theater for 43 years.
This time, four roosters named Kala Manik, Lal Manik, Rocky and Samrat of Achil Club House in Shibbati area of Bogra took part in the fight. The club has 30 fighting cocks of Indian breed.
These fighting roosters can participate in fighting from the age of one and a half months to 4 years. Ducks naturally learn to fight on their own from the age of six months. However, they are specially trained a month before the competition
Amirul Islam, the founder of Achill Club, said that like a wrestler, a fighter has to take care of these roosters. Cashew nuts, raisins, boiled eggs, fruit juice, fish and beef are eaten as food. The price of these roosters varies from eight thousand to one lakh depending on the breed and physical condition.
He also said that the roosters are pets. It is my profession as well as my hobby Apart from maintaining the tradition of rural Bengal, it is very nice to make people happy.
Tasmi Hasan, a class 10 school student, watched the cockfight with rapt attention. He says, in the Boishakhi fair, there are various old-time sports events, it is quite fun to watch.
General Secretary of Bogra Theater Toufiq Hasan Maina said that the extinct games are being displayed in front of the new generation at the Baisakhi fair. The new generation should focus on saving and nurturing their lost culture. We are going to lose these games that carry the tradition of Bengali culture.
