Bowel cancer deaths among women aged 25-49 are predicted to increase by nearly 40 percent this year.

Publika.az reports that the death rate from bowel cancer in this age group will increase by 26 percent in men and 39 percent in women compared to 2018. In terms of mortality, the disease ranks third after lung and prostate cancer among men, and third after breast and lung cancer among women.

Professor Carlo La Vecchia of the University of Milan in Italy said the main factors are obesity, high blood sugar levels and health problems such as diabetes.

Touching on the consumption of more alcoholic beverages and the decrease in physical activity, Vecchia noted that countries with a decrease in alcohol consumption, such as France and Italy, did not experience a significant increase in death rates from this cancer. Early-onset colon cancer tends to be more aggressive and has a very low survival rate.

In an article published in the Annals of Oncology, experts called on governments to extend bowel cancer screening to people aged 45 and over.

Dr. from the World Cancer Research Fund. Panayota Mitrou also said the data was “worrying”, adding: “The reasons for the gender differences are not clear, but should be investigated in more detail.”
