After the invasion of a group of military and police officers from Ecuador at the Mexican Embassy and the arrest of former vice president Jorge Glas, the head of the Foreign Ministry of the Mission in that country, Roberto Canseco, indicated that he fears for the life of former leftist official Rafael Belt.

“I am very worried because they could kill him; there is no basis for doing this, no, this is totally out of the norm,” he said yesterday.

He said he was about to leave when he suddenly encountered the police who entered the premises.

“I am totally defenseless before this group. It cannot be, it cannot be, this has not happened,” said Canseco after being recorded and photographed while struggling with police to prevent Glas from being arrested.

“At the risk of my life, I defended the honor and sovereignty of my country, this cannot be, it is incredible that something like this has happened,” he said.

The candidates for the Presidency of the Republic, Claudia Sheinbaum of Morena, the opposition Xóchitl Gálvez and the Emecista Jorge Álvarez Maynez joined the condemnation.

The three flag bearers described the break-in at the Embassy as an attack on Mexico’s sovereignty.

From Mexico, Foreign Minister Alicia Barcena brought legal actions against the Government of Ecuador before the International Court of Justice and the breaking of diplomatic ties with the Andean country.

For her part, Ecuadorian Cristina Reyes, president of the Andean Parliament, pointed out after the raid on the Mexican Embassy in Quito that her country entered a “serious international conflict.”

“By pleasing a group of haters, they have just put Ecuador in a serious international conflict, which is unforgivable,” he wrote on his social network account X without giving more details.

The statement was made after learning that the Police broke into the Mexican Embassy in Quito and detained Jorge Glas, former vice president during the presidential term of Rafael Correa (2007-2017) on the same day that the Aztec Government granted him political asylum.
