The vast majority of Ukrainians believe that President Vladimir Zelensky is to blame for widespread corruption, revealed a recent survey developed by the Ilko Kucheriv Charitable Foundation for Democratic Initiatives together with the Kiev International Institute of Sociology.

The study was carried out between July 3 and 17 through face-to-face interviews with thousands of citizens. According to results published on Monday, 78% of Ukrainian adults believe that the Ukrainian ruler is “directly responsible” for corruption in the government and military administrations.

Among respondents aged 18-29, 70% agree with the thesis that the president of Ukraine is directly responsible for corruption in the country, while the share of those who hold the same point of view among the older population 60 years old is even higher and is equivalent to 81%.
“A very corrupt country”

The research details that there were no significant differences in the results depending on the region of residence or financial situation. Overall, only 18% disagreed with the statement that Zelensky is responsible for corruption in the country.

On Monday, an unnamed Western European diplomat told Politico that corruption in Ukraine remains a concern and could hamper the country’s bid to be part of the European Union.

Ukraine is “a very corrupt country,” the diplomat said, adding that Zelensky’s plan to use the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) to investigate bribery cases could “send the wrong message.”

Earlier this month, the Ukrainian president replaced Defense Minister Alexei Reznikov, who has been repeatedly criticized for a series of corruption scandals, to be replaced by Rustem Umerov. With RT
