The big American universities like Columbia value their prestige in the number of US presidents, heads of state, Nobel, Pulitzer or even Oscar winners, members of the National Academy and billionaires who have been students and/or professors at them. They are highly ranked, in demand, and a very small percentage of those who apply are accepted. They also have a long history of student protests that are now part of American history itself, such as those against the Vietnam War, or that have the potential to become part of it, such as those for solidarity with Palestine that may are being suppressed but have already affected the terms of discussion overall on developments in the Middle East.
