UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has warned that the multipolar world, in the absence of strong and multilateral institutions, can lead to chaos.
As TASS reports, Guterres announced this at the opening of the 55th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.
“The world is moving towards an era of multipolarity, which can lead to chaos in the absence of strong multilateral institutions,” the UN Secretary General expressed his conviction, adding that this circumstance creates new opportunities for leadership and justice on the international stage, but multipolarity, without strong multilateral institutions is a recipe for chaos.
“As powers compete, tensions rise. The rule of law and the rules of war are being undermined,” Guterres said, adding that the UN Security Council is often deadlocked, unable to resolve the most pressing peace and security issues at hand.
He drew attention to the lack of unity of the Security Council in connection with the events in Ukraine and the military operations in the Gaza Strip.
According to Guterres, this lack of unity has undermined the UNSC’s reputation and it needs a serious reform of its composition and working methods.
