The UN Human Rights Council has demanded that Israel be held accountable for possible war crimes – 2024-04-08 17:08:48

The UN Human Rights Council adopted a resolution calling on Israel to be held accountable for possible war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip. Israel called the resolution a “distorted text”. This was reported by the Reuters agency.

28 countries voted in favor of the resolution, 13 countries abstained, and 6 countries, including the USA and Germany, opposed the adoption of the resolution.

The resolution emphasized “the need to ensure accountability for all violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law to end impunity.”

The document also “expressed grave concern over reports of serious human rights violations and gross violations of international humanitarian law, including possible war crimes and crimes against humanity in the occupied Palestinian territory.”

Meirav Eilon Shahar, Israel’s permanent representative at the UN Human Rights Council, accused the council of “abandoning the people of Israel for a long time and protecting Hamas for a long time.”

“According to today’s resolution, Israel has no right to protect its people, and Hamas has every right to kill and torture innocent Israelis,” he said before the vote.

The US has announced that it will vote against the resolution because it does not condemn Hamas for the October 7 attack on Israel. At the same time, US Permanent Representative to the UN Human Rights Council, Michelle Taylor, noted that Israel is not taking sufficient measures to alleviate the harm caused to civilians.

The UN Human Rights Council, which meets several times a year, is the only intergovernmental body designed to protect human rights around the world.
