The Speaker of the Saeima sees tasks to be performed in strengthening the border of Latvia

As the LETA agency was informed in the office of the Speaker of the Saeima, Mieriņa visited Latvia’s border with Russia and Belarus today, inspecting and verifying the border construction solutions, compliance with deadlines and the difficult construction conditions. Also, the Speaker of the Saeima familiarized herself with the equipment of the border guard and the information systems used.

According to Mieriņa, the Saeima should review the conditions of the border protection zone in order to protect the new border from technical damage, find a solution for the registration and use of border guard vehicles in the border area. Also, during the visit, solutions were identified for reducing queues and improving conditions for drivers, which the Speaker of the Saeima promises to discuss with coalition partners in a cooperation meeting in the near future.

“During the inspection, we were fully convinced of the responsible, creative and patriotic attitude of the border guards towards their duties, which should be assessed accordingly by the state with appropriate remuneration, when planning salary increases in the next year’s state budget,” says Mieriņa.

The Speaker of the Saeima visited the Opulia and Piedruja border guard departments, as well as the Pāternieki border control point. The visit was attended by the Chief of the State Border Guard, General Guntis Pujāts, as well as the Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior, Igors Rajevs.
