Parishes are dissatisfied with the closure of post offices

Already last year, the closure of the post offices in Lieģi and Rucava had caused great discontent among the inhabitants of the southern Kurzeme region. But other post offices in the region will also stop operating this year, as they cause losses to Latvijas Post. The Cīrava Post Office will open its doors for the last time this Thursday.

“Terrible! What can we older people do now, they helped us with everything! It will be difficult,” believes nurse Lilia.

Cīravniece Biruta, however, said that he lives 5 kilometers from the center, “in the forest I have very big problems, for example I need some letters or something else, I will no longer have anyone to deliver them”.

Ms. Mirdza stressed that she herself cannot get on the bus, “if I have to take the bus, I can’t leave, much less on foot.”

Dissatisfaction with such a change in the company’s policy was also expressed by residents of other parishes, who already have to travel 20-25 kilometers to reach the nearest post office, but in the future this distance will at least double.

“People … how will they now get somewhere in the city center? Others have a pension, transfers of some kind, parcels,” said Ruta, a resident of the southern Kurzeme district.

“I think it shouldn’t, it shouldn’t be closed. Especially for parents who don’t use parcels and so on. They already want to send a telegram. Or a congratulation,” adds Genoveva, a resident of the southern Kurzeme region. .

The post office will not change its plans: the branch will close

To maintain postal services in their current form, the Southern Kurzeme Regional Council offered Latvijas Post to take over the duties of post office employees.

«Each former parish has one of our employees who could be trained. We proposed that it could be similar to postal work. Because the post office is a state event, and we are part of the state. But [Pasta] The council says: it’s good that we are ready, but they are not ready to return these services to us quickly,” said Aivars Priedols, president of the Southern Kurzeme District Council (Greens and Farmers’ Union).

Latvijas Pasts will not change its plans, moreover these will not only affect southern Kurzeme. By the end of the year, only 71 post offices will remain in the whole of Latvia.

“This year we started the year with 176 departments and in total our plan will affect 105 departments, of which 12 will be closed physically, while 93 will undergo a change in format,” said Mārtiņš Liepiņš, head of postal and delivery departments Department of SEA “Latvijas past”.

From now on, residents will be able to receive postal services by requesting it in advance via the customer service phone, and the postman will come to them on the next working day.

The company promises to find and offer other positions to employees of the liquidated post offices.
