Austrian companies need technically experienced, trained occupational health professionals. But Austria currently lacks a good 600 of these experts to fill all open positions.

Because this development has been apparent for several years, AUVA, the Medical Association and the Federal Ministries for Labor and Economic Affairs as well as for Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection have introduced a Information offer for those interested built up. This initiated a training offensive that is now beginning to take effect with full courses offered by the providers of this training.

Currently estimates DDr. Karl Hochgatterer (President of the Austrian Academy for Occupational Medicine and Prevention and President of the Austrian Society for Occupational Medicine) that more than 400 doctors will complete their training since the start of the campaign by the end of 2024. “The gap between demand and new forces is by no means closed, but the development is correct and gives hope for the coming years,” said Hochgatterer. “This is in the interest of the companies, which also have to fulfill their legal obligations in this area, and even more so in the interest of all employees, who benefit from the expertise of occupational health professionals. All the more, efforts must continue to completely close the gap mentioned.”

On the one hand, occupational health professionals advise management on health issues related to the design of workplaces and operational processes, and on the other hand, they advise employees on the concrete implementation in their everyday work. There are also concerns such as vaccinations, ergonomics or specific health issues for target groups such as apprentices, migrants or older employees.
