American basketball player Brittney Griner contemplated suicide during her 10-month prison sentence in Russia in 2022. The two-time Olympic champion stated this in an interview with the ABC television station.
Griner was detained the year before last February at the Moscow airport because she was carrying e-cigarette refills containing hemp oil. The court sent her to prison for nine years and the former Yekaterinburg player said, that there were times when she thought of taking her own life!
“I thought I wouldn’t be able to handle what was coming,” Griner said. “There was a big blood stain on the mattress, I didn’t have soap or toilet paper… I often felt like I wasn’t even human to them,” added.
After returning to the USA, Griner played in the WNBA for Phoenix. The four-time Europa League winner was also selected for the US team for the Paris Olympics. Although the two-time world champion has declared that she will never play abroad again, the Olympics are an exception.
Basketball player Griner said she had suicidal thoughts in a Russian prison.
