Amil Patel, the former financial planning manager of the Jacksonville Jaguars of the US National Football League, is accused of embezzling club funds.
Publika.az reports that he spent most of the money he stole on sports betting and a lavish lifestyle.
In February of this year, Patel met with NFL officials who were investigating his gambling activities, particularly regular sports betting and “fantasy leagues” on websites such as DraftKings and FanDuel. Later that month, he was fired from the Jacksonville job due to his gambling addiction.
Patel’s lawyer said that about 99% of the stolen funds were used to cover his client’s losses. At the same time, Amil planned to return the money to the club with interest. However, federal prosecutors allege that Patel used the virtual credit card program to spend more than $22 million of the company’s money not only on gambling, but also on private jet trips, luxury hotels for himself and friends, cryptocurrency purchases and other services.
