On March 7, the second meeting of the Organizing Committee was held in connection with the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).

Publika.az reports that Samir Nuriyev, the head of the Administration of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the chairman of the Organizing Committee, in accordance with the instructions of President Ilham Aliyev, noted the work done within the framework of preparation for COP29 during the period that passed from the first meeting. Samir Nuriyev pointed out that the composition of the Organizing Committee was further expanded by the order of the head of our state, and inclusiveness was ensured by the representation of Milli Majlis deputies and representatives of civil society.

The Chairman of the Organizing Committee stated that in the speech of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev at the meeting of the Southern Gas Corridor Consultative Council and in an interview with “Euronews” television, he determined the main directions and framework of the agenda of the COP29 Chairmanship. As reflected in these theses, Samir Nuriyev emphasized the importance of a fair approach to the countries rich in oil and natural gas resources and the evaluation of the activities of these states in exchange for their contribution to environmental issues. The Chairman of the Organizing Committee recently announced that Azerbaijan has joined the “Global Methane Promise”, which includes the goal of reducing the volume of methane emissions by 30 percent by 2030 compared to 2020.

Noting that the Action Plan for declaring 2024 as the “Year of Solidarity for the Green World” has already been approved in the Republic of Azerbaijan, and the Action Plan for COP29 is being prepared, the Chairman of the Organizing Committee emphasized the importance of ensuring reconciliation between the two Action Plans.

Samir Nuriyev, referring to the work carried out with the Secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, noted that the preparedness level of our country was positively evaluated by the UN.

The Chairman of the Organizing Committee stated that taking into account the successful experience of Azerbaijan’s chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement and its active representation in other international organizations at COP29, our country is capable of playing the role of a bridge between the global South and the global North and will make efforts to achieve global solidarity and consensus at COP29.

Samir Nuriyev also stated that the establishment of the “Tripartite” mechanism between the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Azerbaijan and Brazil regarding the COP is a commendable step.

Then, Mukhtar Babayev, the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, the appointed president of COP29, made a speech and discussed the issues arising from our country’s presidency of COP29, his visits to Turkey, Germany, the UAE and Kenya, and his visits with officials of foreign countries and international organizations responsible for climate issues. informed about the meetings. Mukhtar Babayev noted that more visits and meetings will be organized as part of the preparatory process for this prestigious event, and pointed out that the next visit will be to China.

The Minister of Digital Development and Transport Rashad Nabiyev informed about the steps taken towards the solution of transport issues in the process of preparation for COP29.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chief Negotiator of COP29 Yalchin Rafiyev spoke about Azerbaijan’s COP29 priorities and initiatives, contacts with various counterparts.

Narmin Carchalova, the Chairman of the Management Board of the COP29 Operating Company, informed about the organizational and logistical issues and preparatory work.

MP Nigar Arpadarai spoke about his activities as a high-level champion of climate change.

Deputy Fatma Yıldırım reported on parliamentary diplomacy and climate changes, as well as activities of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan regarding COP29.
