The professional association of Austrian psychologists emphasizes the importance of mental health in the workplace

Vienna (OTS) On the occasion of World Day for Safety and Health at Work on April 28, 2024, the Professional Association of Austrian Psychologists (BÖP) is drawing attention to a topic that is often overlooked but is of crucial importance: the mental health in the workplace.

According to Principle 10 of the European Pillar of Social Rights, everyone has the right to work in an environment that meets their professional needs and enables long-term participation in the labor market. Both physical and mental health are fundamental prerequisites for work ability and performance.

Mental illness is one of the main causes of absenteeism and early retirement, which is why it is essential that employers and employees alike recognize the importance of mental health and take appropriate measures. Quality-assured psychological support can have a preventative effect and reduce follow-up costs. Work, business and organizational psychology and its competencies play an important role.

Health – a concern for companies

“Mental health in the workplace is a crucial factor for the well-being and performance of employees,” emphasizes BÖP President ao. University Prof. Dr. Beate Wimmer-Puchinger. “Psychosomatic complaints and psychosocial stress, including burnout, are the consequences of current developments on the labor market. Companies that invest in health promotion and involve psychologists support the systematic and holistic improvement of working conditions.”

Work, business and organizational psychology plays a crucial role in the legally required assessment of psychological stress in the workplace as well as in the design and improvement of working conditions in companies. Their broad range of skills also comes into play in company health management and in the prevention of negative consequences such as burnout and chronic stress. Through her expertise, she contributes to creating a healthy working environment and promoting the long-term well-being of employees.

Mental health is prevention in the workplace

The BÖP appeals to companies and organizations to invest more in health promotion in the workplace and to implement preventative measures to support and improve the mental health of their employees. In this way, working environments can be created that are both safe and conducive to the well-being of employees.
