The PT decides to welcome Marta Suplicy, but does not set a date for the accession of the former mayor, who should be Boulos’ deputy in the SP controversy | 2024 elections in Sao Paulo

The Municipal Directorate of the Workers’ Party (PT) of São Paulo has decided to welcome Marta Suplicy back into the party approximately nine years after her disaffiliation in 2015. The decision was taken this Tuesday (16) by the members of the Executive of match . However, there is still no date for the formal act of affiliation.

The former secretary of the current mayor of the capital, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), is expected to run for deputy mayor together with Guilherme Boulos (PSOL) in the race for mayor of São Paulo.

“The Municipal Directory welcomes and will welcome the return of Marta Suplicy to the PT,” said Laércio Ribeiro, president of the Municipal Directory, in a press conference.

He also presented other decisions taken by the 16 members of the municipal council:

• There will be no Workers’ Party caucuses over the São Paulo municipal election dispute;
• Marta will be invited to participate in a “listening process”, that is, in dialogue with the municipal, state and federal benches of the PT.

In both votes the results were the same: 12 “yes” (for the membership of the former mayor and also for the suspension of the caucuses), 1 “no”, one abstention and two absences.

Senator Eduardo Suplicy (PT), who also presented himself as a possible candidate for deputy mayor, presented a document divided into two parts. The first concerns the proposal to approve Marta as candidate for vice-president of the PT. The second part — “programmatic”, according to Laércio — was accepted and forwarded to the “construction of the government program”.

Suplicy said he changed his mind and decided to support his ex-wife’s name as deputy after a conversation with Boulos on Saturday (13). Furthermore, he has also heard from his children that it “wouldn’t be appropriate” for him to run as a candidate at these caucuses.

“The PT has a history of caucuses and I would like them to happen, but I accepted that the party could have Marta as its vice-presidential candidate. And my commitment is to help Boulos win,” he said.

Marta’s enrollment in the PT

Even though February 3 is the most popular day, Laércio informed that there is no official date yet for Marta’s affiliation event:

“Could it be the 3rd? Could it be the 2nd? It could be. We have to build it according to the agendas of the personalities we want to be in this act of affiliation,” the president said.

OR the formal request has not yet occurred, since what we agreed with Marta was to wait for the deliberations of this Tuesday’s meeting (16). On Saturday (13th), Boulos (PSOL) had lunch with Marta, who agreed to be his vice-presidential candidate. She accepted the role after speaking with President Lula.

Concerned about the resistance of some PT and PSOL activists to Marta’s name, Boulos said he will bring the former mayor to meetings with social movements.

Boulos arrived from Celta, around 2pm on Saturday (13), in the building of the former mayor of São Paulo and now former secretary of the current administration Ricardo Nunes (MDB), in the Alameda Franca, in Jardins, an exclusive neighborhood of the capital of Sao Paulo.

Upon leaving, Boulos spoke to journalists and declared that the PT will define the ticket and that Marta adds a lot to the project.

“The next steps, both its affiliation to the PT and the formalization of the ticket, will be taken by the municipal directorate of the Workers’ Party, certainly with the participation of Rui, of several other leaders, knowing the following: it adds Marta profoundly to the project which we are building in the city of Sao Paulo,” he said.

“Once she joins the Workers’ Party, I will take her to a meeting with the social movements in the city of São Paulo so that Marta can reconnect with the PT and resume her relationship with the social movements, probably in February, our meeting with social movements movements.

“The political differences, the criticisms that I made of her, that she made of me, this only shows that it is an alliance that is expanding, it is not an alliance between two people who think the same way. We have already had differences, such as since, even in the last elections, several parties that are with us today were opponents”, he adds.

In a statement released after lunch, Marta said she was honored by the visit and published the manifesto of the Frente Amplio.

“I received them in my residence, this Saturday (January 13), and I feel very honored by the arrival of Guilherme Boulos and his wife Natália, and the friends and fellow fighters Rui Falcão and his wife Cris. On this occasion I save the Frente Ampla Manifesto, launched in this same residence. It is the expression of what this meeting represents.”

“The city of millions of drought refugees will not retreat into silence when so many people need your extraordinary voice. No, we do not want and cannot run away from this mission, St. Paul. We implore your vanguard soul: let’s walk together to keep your and our spirit of freedom and respect alive!”, reads the incipit of the manifesto.

On Friday (12th) the São Paulo PT hit hard at the reaffiliation of former mayor Marta Suplicy to the party. The event should take place on February 3, in the capital Sao Paulo, in the presence of Lula. Place and time are still being discussed by the party’s municipal management.

Former secretary of International Relations of the Municipality of São Paulo under Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB), Marta is currently without a party. You left the PT in 2015, after 33 years, in the midst of Operation Lava Jato.

The former mayor dropped the acronym, saying the acronym had led to “one of the biggest corruption scandals in the Brazilian nation.”

At the time, Marta had broken with then-President Dilma Rousseff (PT) and voted in favor of her impeachment in the Senate in 2016, even though she was Minister of Culture under the PT administration.
