SAN LUIS POTOSÍ, Mexico.- The official press has given extensive coverage this Wednesday, May 1, to the activities organized in the different locations of the country for Labor Day.

However, after the effort of getting up early to attend the events, parading, carrying banners in favor of the Government and sweating under the scorching sun, a day of interruptions in the electrical service will await the Cuban workers.

In total, there will be eight thermoelectric units out of the system, some due to breakdowns and others due to maintenance, according to the Electrical Union (UNE).

Units 2 and 3 of the CTE Santa Cruz, unit 5 of the CTE Rente and unit 2 of the CTE Felton are damaged. Unit 6 of Energás Jaruco, unit 1 of the CTE Santa Cruz, unit 6 of the CTE Nuevitas and unit 8 of the CTE Mariel are under maintenance.

The outlook is worsened by limitations in thermal generation, which reach 414 MW.

In addition, 31 distributed generation plants are out of service due to lack of fuel, for a total of 284 MW less.

Although it is expected that during the time of highest demand for electricity the Distributed Generation engines “which are awaiting maintenance and their use is authorized with 134 MW” will come into operation, the two engines in the Regla lake with 18 MW, unit 2 of the CTE Santa Cruz with 65 MW, unit 5 of the CTE Rente with 65 MW and more, will not be enough.

The UNE predicts that for the peak hour there will be an availability of 2,367 MW and a maximum demand of 2,750 MW, for a deficit of 383 MW, “so if the expected conditions continue, an impact of 453 MW is forecast during this time.”

“It must be hard after a fervent parade to come home hungry, hot and tired and find that there is no power,” said a Cuban in the comments section of the UNE post announcing the blackouts.

“Excellent work by the UNE in greeting to May Day, giving more blackouts to working people who have no reason to go to parade,” another Internet user said ironically.

“That has no other name, it is abuse of the Cuban people and a lack of respect, Cuba can no longer tolerate the abuse but that is good that it happens,” wrote another.
