The award, which has been awarded by French film experts since 2005, is intended for exceptional film achievements that are qualitatively different from classic filmmaking.

“The appreciation given to The Painted Bird and its French distributor, especially from the French film critics, is simply amazing. I am really happy for my crew, for all the actors and for myself. Not only from this award, but also from the fact that more than four years have passed since the world premiere in Venice, and the bird still flies around the world so nicely and well.” confided Václav Marhoul, whose nearly three-hour black-and-white film was distributed in more than 26 countries and was seen by over one hundred thousand viewers in Czech cinemas alone.

In almost five years of its “life”, The Painted Bird was selected for a total of 72 international festivals, at which it won a total of 37 main prizes or nominations for them.

Among the most important awards, however, are nominations for the Golden Lion by selection in the main competition of the Venice Film Festival, inclusion on the so-called short list of the American Film Academy for the Oscar award and nomination for the best feature film of the year by the European Film Academy. Ten of the thirteen nominations for the Czech Lion Award turned in the Painted Bird on home soil. The film is currently also available for viewing, for example, on the German public television station 3SAT in the Arthouse 2024 section.
