It was reported that on January 20, 1990, military units of the former Soviet army were deployed in the capital Baku and several districts of the republic in order to break the faith and will of the people who stood up with the act of creating a sovereign, democratic state in Azerbaijan, to break their national identity, and to suppress the national liberation movement. A serious crime was committed against the civilians who came to the streets to defend the right cause of the people, hundreds of people were injured, brutally murdered and disappeared.

The National Leader of our people, Heydar Aliyev, immediately after the tragedy – on January 21, put his life in danger and came to the permanent representation of Azerbaijan in Moscow and expressed his strong protest against this bloody crime. In the following years, on the initiative of Great Leader Heydar Aliyev, the events of January 20 were given a political and legal assessment, and this date was declared the National Day of Mourning.

34 years have passed since the Bloody January tragedy, when Azerbaijan gave its first martyrs for its sovereignty. The Bloody January of 1990 was written in our history as both a tragedy and a page of heroism. It was emphasized that the tragedy of Bloody January did not break the determination of the Azerbaijani people, on the contrary, it fueled their struggle for freedom, put an end to the Soviet rule in the republic and restored the state independence of Azerbaijan.

Then there was a concert of classical music by the talented young pianist Riyad Mammadov. The young pianist performed classical music composers such as P. Tchaikovsky, I. Bach, Vagif Mustafazade, M. Petruchiani, as well as his own works.
